Peace Dialogue Initiative by Social Scientists and Independent Citizens in Bastar area of Chhattisgarh

We (group of independent peace loving social scientists and media men and myself) have released the study in a well attended meeting of intellectuals, social scientists, journalists and people who are concerned with 'Peace in Bastar' at India International Center, New Delhi on 7th April, 2007. It's a study on the possibility of peace for creative socio-cultural and economic development in Bastar. We have included two open letters. One to the government and the other to the CPI (Maoist) to take steps which can give peace a chance in Bastar.

We are really concerned about the miseries of the local tribals of the area and sincerely wish that they should join mainstream of progress and development. It is proposed that similar studies with suitable appeals, both to the government and CPI (Maoist) would be carried out for Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar and other naxal affected areas.

We sincerely hope that there can be ample opportunity for finding ways and means to end violence in the area which will ensure a better prosperous future for the tribals, who have lived in the shadow of poverty and under development since ages.

You can read the study below or download it and I welcome your feedback on our study.

One thing is certain, violence can only beget violence. And this can be said without taking sides. AP Police had to create a special police unit called 'greyhounds' only when it found that it's ordinary police force was not able to tackle the Naxalites who were using violence as part of their tactics and strategy. If Chhattisgarh Govt. is also thinking of creating a special 'greyhound' type of force, one should not be surprised. As indicated in our report on Bastar, no government in modern world would accept a situation where it is being cornered b a group which is using violence (by whatever name it calls it and whatever political logic it may give for its inevitability) and would use strong and violent counter measures. But while this battle of violence and counter-violence is being raged the actual sufferers are the poor and deprived section of society in the name of whom and for the betterment of whom both are fighting. Therefore, it is important that peace dialogues are earnestly initiated by both the naxalites and the government. I have indicated how it can be done in the report and the logic thereof.
